About Waterton Academy Trust
Waterton Academy Trust was established in July 2014, with Waterton Academy Trust beginning with a single founding school, Walton Primary Academy. Since then, the trust has grown thoughtfully and strategically into a strong and highly collaborative organisation serving communities across Wakefield and Barnsley.
Today, the trust includes 16 primary academies, two independent special schools and four pre-school settings, educating 4,659 children from babies through to age 11. The trust employs 703 colleagues across its schools and central team, all working together to improve outcomes and opportunities for children and families.
Our schools are organised geographically to strengthen collaboration, professional learning and leadership support. This locality-based model enables leaders and staff to work closely together, share expertise and provide high levels of challenge and support across the trust.
In response to increasing local need, the trust opened its first independent special academy in 2023, working closely with local authority partners to strengthen specialist provision and increase capacity for children with additional needs. Inclusion sits at the heart of our work, and we are committed to ensuring every child receives the support, care and ambition they deserve.
We have also expanded our early years offer through a growing number of pre-school settings, recognising the importance of securing the very best start for children and families within our communities.
Alongside our school improvement and inclusion work, we are also proud to be an outstanding apprenticeship provider, specialising in Level 3 and Level 5 Teaching Assistant qualifications, including the Specialist Teaching Assistant programme. Our apprenticeship provision reflects our commitment to developing skilled, knowledgeable and confident professionals who can make a lasting difference to children’s lives.
